Calgary
business lobbyist says he will run for leadership of federal Tories
CALGARY (CP)
- A business lobbyist and owner of a self-proclaimed Christian lobby
group wants Joe Clark's job. Craig Chandler, 32, announced Friday
he will run for the leadership of the federal Conservative party
on a platform of unifying the Tories with the Canadian Alliance.
"I'm not running to dismantle anything, I'm running to unify it,"
said Chandler, who believes his biggest opponent will be Nova Scotia
MP Peter MacKay. "This is a tough (fight) but I wouldn't even throw
my hat in the ring if I didn't think I had a chance of winning."
The former Reform party candidate said it's time the family feud
between the Alliance and Conservatives is put to rest. In a press
release announcing his intentions, Chandler said he has campaign
teams set up in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. MacKay, Calgary
lawyer Jim Prentice and Saskatchewan grain farmer David Orchard
have already officially started their campaigns. Chandler heads
the Progressive Group for Independent Business.
