PGIB
WAS SUCCESSFUL IN IT'S DEFEAT OF RESOLUTION 9

(Edmonton) Those
that promised a vicious fight and the passage of Resolution 9 (the
banning of dual memberships) within the federal Progressive Conservative
Party were left defeated on Saturday, August 24, 2002. After the
votes were announced PGIB members leapt emotionally to their feet
with shouts of victory and exchanged hugs like they just won the
Stanley Cup. Victory never tasted so sweet!
Unlike, the
bleak picture the media painted about the end of talks and the death
of a united right, there was victory on the convention two weekends
ago in Edmonton. The media in our mind did a great disservice to
Canadians by not discussing the positives of our united right efforts.
Their desire for negatives was alarming. Their lack of balance was
quite typical.
By the defeat
of Resolution 9 on the convention floor it not only allowed the
PGIB www.2cards.ca campaign to continue, but, it also allowed the
right to be brought together through dual memberships. Simply put
the majority of Conservatives and the majority Alliance members
whom overwhelmingly support a merger, can bring that about by joining
each others party.
This last Progressive
Conservative convention is clear evidence that the www.2cards.ca
campaign is working. Policies such as an elected Senate, Citizens
Initiatives, elected Supreme Court Judges, Citizens Commissions,
Free Votes, Fixed Terms, Fixed Elections etc... were on the federal
Progressive Conservative convention floor for the first time!
Some of these
policies failed and some like Elected Supreme Court judges, Free
Votes and an elected Senate passed. These are three major policies
of the PGIB. Although the elected Judges will be elected by Parliament
and the Senate will be elected by region these are major steps in
the right direction.
These policies
made it to the floor primarily because of PGIB members and / or
members of the Progressive Conservatives that also hold Canadian
Alliance cards.
However, although
PGIB members worked the convention floor like a well orchestrated
play, two members in particular require special mention. Neil Wiltzen
and Don Verbeke deserve many words of thanks.
Firstly, Neil
Wiltzen proved once again his loyalty to PGIB and how he is a major
asset to promoting PGIB's agenda. Mr. Wiltzen who has served on
PGIB's Executive Council for over 4 years insured that you could
not enter the convention or leave it without getting a PGIB policy
brochure and an invitation to the Hospitality Suite.
Don Verbeke
helped out by stamping the PGIB logo on DOMO gas coupons that we
gave to the delegates. Mr. Verbeke a long time Edmonton PGIB member
also was there by PGIB President Craig B. Chandler's side to encourage
him during some of the emotional debates, especially during the
debate of the 301 rule and Resolution 9. Former MP John Crosbie
and Mr. Chandler exchanged a few choice words and it was good to
have Mr. Verbeke present as a calming factor for Mr. Chandler. If
you are familiar with the personalities of Mr. Crosbie and Mr. Chandler
you can just imagine what could have occurred when they sat across
the aisle from each other.
Our efforts
are paying off and our national campaign continues in Alberta for
September, Ontario in October and British Columbia in November.

POLL PROVES THE VALIDITY OF 2CARDS.CA CAMPAIGN OF A UNITED RIGHT

A poll, conducted
between Aug. 13 and Aug. 22, 2002 conducted by The Ipsos-Reid/CTV/Globe
and Mail clearly indicates a united-right party would keep the support
of most Tories and Canadian Alliance members while picking up additional
backing from disgruntled Liberal and even NDP voters.
The poll was
based on a randomly selected sample of 1,971 adult Canadians. The
results are considered accurate to within plus or minus 2.2 percentage
points, 19 times out of 20
It seems that
the grassroots of the Progressive Conservatives and the Canadian
Alliance want exactly what PGIB has been pushing with our www.2cards.ca
Project. This poll confirms our comment of: "...the conservative
movement if unified is just striking distance from grasping the
popular vote. We believe that if there is a sincere united and concerted
effort Canadians will embrace the conservative movement" as
mentioned at http://www.2cards.ca/pages/english/content/oneVision.htm
shows we are and always have been on the right track.
The poll indicates
that a significant number of Canadians, 44 per cent, say if the
Progressive Conservatives and Canadian Alliance parties merged they
would consider voting for them in a federal election, according
to a new poll.
Such a party would be further ahead in support than either the Conservatives
or the Alliance separately.
Eight in ten
(78 per cent) current Progressive Conservative supporters and nine
in ten (87 per cent) current supporters of the Canadian Alliance
say they would consider voting for a united party -- so would 27
per cent of committed Liberal voters and 26 per cent of committed
NDP voters, according to the poll..
Details:
Residents of Alberta (68 per cent) are the most likely to consider
voting for a united party, followed by about half of voters in British
Columbia (53 per cent), Saskatchewan/Manitoba (51 per cent), and
Atlantic Canada (47 per cent).
Lower proportions
of voters in Ontario (43 per cent) and Quebec (28 per cent) say
they would consider a united Conservative-Alliance party.
Older voters
(48 per cent) are more likely to consider a united-right party,
than younger voters (41 per cent).
Men (46 per
cent) are more likely to consider voting for such a party, than
women (41 per cent).

HOSPITALITY
SUITE ATTENDED BY OVER HALF OF TORY DELEGATES

$5,000
that is the amount that we spent entertaining Progressive Conservative
delegates from across Canada. Food, 587 beers, Hotel costs, dinners
and bussing PGIB members to Edmonton was the cost of getting our
message across.
The PGIB www.2cards.ca
hospitality suite was visited by 143 people on Friday, August 23,
2002 and every delegate that arrived enjoyed great beer and was
convinced to support us in our effort to defeat Resolution 9. On
Friday we were in competition with 13 other Hospitality Suites and
saw a rush of people at about 12:30 am.
On Saturday,
August 24, 2002 the PGIB Suite was the place to be with an average
of 40-50 people their at any given time and the total head count
was 267. The party spilled into the hallway of the hotel and there
were no complaints as the crowd remained well behaved and focused
on sincere dialogue.
The Young Conservatives
ranked the Keith Marlowe Suite and the PGIB Suite the "Most
Happening" Suites of the 2002 Federal Progressive Conservative
Convention. The evening ended off with Craig B. Chandler (PGIB National
President), Neil Wiltzen (Western Canada 2cards.ca Chairman), Truper
McBride (Cochrane Town Council Member) a Liberal member and an NDP
member that snuck into the Hospitality Suite. The one thing we all
agreed on was that the Liberal was out of his bloody mind. It was
odd to see our President and an NDP supporter tag teaming the Liberal.
The party shut
down at 4:30 a.m. and 7 members joined PGIB with over 25 others
highly likely to join PGIB as corporate or individual members. We
even have interest in opening up a chapter of the PGIB Young Conservative
Foundation (PGIBYCF) at the University of Saskatchewan.
A special thanks
goes to Don Verbeke and Neil Wiltzen for their efforts not only
on the convention floor, but in their help with the Hospitality
Suite that attracted over half of the Tory delegates.
PGIB made it's
mark on the convention floor with policies and it's defeat of Resolution
9 and got into the minds of the delegates through sincere debate.
PGIB made it into the hearts of the delegates with the hospitality
suite and through our Edmonton office fielding calls from everything
from where to shop and where good restaurants were located.
PGIB attended
the 2002 Federal Progressive Conservative Convention to defeat Resolution
9. PGIB walked away from that convention with a victory under it's
belt and plenty of new friends with a common vision of a united
right.
